Sunset Strip/Sunset Hills/Doheny EstatesSunset Hills is a small, affluent enclave in the Hollywood district of the City of Los Angeles, California. It is bordered by Laurel Canyon on the east, Sunset Plaza Drive on the west and Sunset Blvd on the south, which is also the City of Los Angeles' border with the City of West Hollywood. Primary access roads are Kings Rd., Little Hollywood Blvd, Queens Rd. and Sunset Plaza Dr. A neighborhood of expensive, multi-million dollar homes clinging to dramatically rising hills, Sunset Hills is home to such landmarks as the Chateau Marmont Hotel, built in the 1920s and the site of John Belushi's overdose, and a famous Frank Lloyd Wright home on little Hollywood Blvd. Today the Strip contains some of the most exclusive condominium complexes on the West Coast. The most coveted residences are the celebrity-studded hills above the Sunset Strip. Accessible by only a handful of streets and aggressively patrolled by security, this ultra-exclusive neighborhood of multi-million dollar homes above the Sunset Strip provide the ultimate in seclusion, luxury, and staggering views of the entire L.A. basin. The highest concentration of celebrities living in Los Angeles are in this part of the Hollywood Hills, located just above Sunset Boulevard, from Kings Road, to Sunset Plaza Drive, to Doheny Drive. Residents enjoy seclusion and staggering views of Los Angeles. Homes typically range from $3–5 million for small multi-level houses, with some larger homes exceeding $10 million. Some celebrities living in the Hollywood Hills above the Sunset Strip include Christina Aguilera, Cameron Diaz, Paris Hilton, Kylie Minogue, Leonardo DiCaprio, Megan Mullally, Keanu Reeves, Jose Eber, and Jewel. Laurel CanyonTucked in against the trees of Laurel Canyon it's easy to forget just how close you are to everything. The leaves and branches drown out the sound of the city, but a faint glow at night, reminds you that its near by. The neighborhood is close to all of the major studios like Warner Bros, Universal, Paramount and the Hollywood nightlife. Laurel Canyon is an important transit corridor between West Hollywood and the San Fernando Valley, specifically Studio City. Seeing the the majestic Laurel Canyon every morning, is a revitalizing way to start your day. To live here is to feel part of Hollywood history. If you traveled back in time, you would hear Jimi Hendrix whale on his back porch letting it echo against the hills for all to hear. Down the street you might hear Jim Morrison answer back, jamming with the rest of the Doors. If the rock history was not enough, Laurel Canyon is currently home to the likes of Justin Timberlake, Christina Aguilera and George Clooney. With beautiful scenery , great schools, and general A-list community features, this is an area not to be overlooked by any prospective Hollywood hills home buyer.
Whitley HeightsEstates are perched high on promontories fastened to the hillsides. Fashioned after the great Gothic estates of Europe, these homes were mainly built by Charles Toberman and John De Lario who had made a name for himself in other hillside communities. Whitley Heights is a residential neighborhood in the Hollywood district of Los Angeles, California. Named for Hobart Johnstone "HJ" Whitley, the "Father of Hollywood", Whitley Heights was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1982. In 1918, HJ Whitley commissioned architect A.S. Barnes to design Whitley Heights as a Mediterranean-style village on the steep hillsides above Hollywood Boulevard, and it became the first celebrity community. The neighborhood is roughly bordered on the north and east by Cahuenga Boulevard, on the west by Highland Avenue, and on the south by Franklin Avenue. It overlooks the tourist district of Hollywood, including the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Grauman's Chinese Theatre, and the Hollywood Bowl amphitheater. The neighborhood was bisected and some landmark homes destroyed when U.S. Route 101, a.k.a. the Hollywood Freeway, was built after World War II. Among Whitley Heights' many famous residents have been Rudolph Valentino, Barbara Stanwyck, W.C. Fields, Jean Harlow, Carole Lombard, William Powell, Tyrone Power, Gloria Swanson, Rosalind Russell, Judy Garland, and Marlene Dietrich.
Nichols CanyonNichols Canyon is an area in the Hollywood Hills of Los Angeles County, California. It begins at Hollywood Blvd. on its south end and snakes its way north into the hills below Mulholland Drive. Nichols Canyon has a natural, year-round, spring-fed creek and waterfall over 100’ high, and several natural and man-made small water falls. They are the only natural waterfalls in the City of Los Angeles. The stream that flows through the bottom of Nichols Canyon attracts coyotes, frogs, deer, raccoons, skunks, rabbits and other wildlife. Hawks can often be seen circling the area as well. Home to many celebrities throughout the years, Nichols Canyon is a favorite jogging and cyclist road. Nichols Canyon was named after John G. Nichols who served as mayor of Los Angeles, California between 1852 and 1853 and again from 1856 to 1859. He was a businessman and a builder who lived in the first brick house to be built in Los Angeles, and he was the first mayor to expand the city. In the early days, approximately 3/4 mile up the canyon, was a small sales office with an old western type porch and roof overhang where canyon children would gather to play in the stream and make forts in the native sycamore, oak, sumac, sage, yucca and laurel. It is now known as "Rick E Lake", named after the current owner, Rick Ambrose. The property features 150 ft (46 m). of waterfront on a year-round stream with four waterfalls. Remodeled several times, the home was expanded to 2 bedrooms/2 baths and now features a rustic antique heart pine interior. The house is widely believed to be the centerpiece of David Hockney's painting " Nichols Canyon". Today, few of the original bungalow and cape cod style houses remain, having been expanded or replaced. The British artist David Hockney was a Hollywood Hills resident near the top of Nichols Canyon. He created an acrylic painting on canvas called Nichols Canyon in 1980. The bright colors depict the winding road and landscape of the Hollywood Hills in the late 1970s. Nichols Canyon is also featured in his painting Mullholland Drive. The two story red-roofed white house featured prominently in the center of the Nichols Canyon Road painting is the Michiels House, which is located approximately one mile up Nichols Canyon Road from Hollywood Boulevard. As in the Hockney painting, there is a stop sign and a right hand turn in the road in front of the house. Members of the Michiels family have lived in this home for three generations. Next door lived Ava Gardner who purchased her Nichols Canyon home in 1948. This home is featured in Architectural Digest, Hollywood at Home, March 2006. Celebrities who have lived there include Dan Aykroyd, Kevin Costner, Wes Craven, Ellen DeGeneres, Janice Dickinson, Richard Dreyfuss, Bud Ekins, Ava Gardner, George Harrison, Robert Hays, Rob Lowe, Melissa Mathison, Matthew McConnaughey, Steve McQueen, Anthony Perkins, Julia Roberts, Telly Savalas, Ryan Seacrest, Frank Sinatra, Ringo Starr, Kiefer Sutherland, Bruce Willis, Frank Zappa, Renée Zellweger, Jonathan Rhys Meyers, and Ian Ziering. |
